The Story of Bhairon Singh Longewala
Bhairon Singh was deployed to the Longewala post in Jaisalmer’s Thar desert. He commanded a small BSF unit of six to seven people which was accompanied by a company of 120 men with the 23rd Punjab Army Regiment. It was the bravery of these men that destroyed a raiding Pakistani brigade and also a tank regiment on the spot on December 5, 1971. He was awarded several medals in 1972 for his brave action. After that, he was posted to the 14th BSF Battalion during the war. After that, Bhairon Singh retired from military service as a naik in 1987.
